Thailand's weekly cabinet meeting Tuesday resolved to appoint former attorney-general Kanit na Nakhon a chairman of an independent fact-finding committee to probe the April-May political violence, the Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

The April-May political violence resulted in nearly 90 deaths and about 2,000 injuries.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said the cabinet authorized Kanit to complete selecting the panel's members by 15 days.

The fact-finding committee can independently define working procedures, the prime minister said.

Meanwhile, the defense and interior ministry have been assigned to prove weapons found at the anti-government rally sites, Abhisit said.

The two ministries have three weeks to prove the weapons and make a preliminary report to the government, Abhisit added.
