The Listening Post is a new series that invites close, unhurried listening to the stories of individuals and the histories they carry with them.
In part one we meet Mary - a civil servant living in the UK.
Oxford-educated and courting a cavalry officer, she is perhaps typical of a well-to-do young English woman. But within her family Mary is known as Thida, the daughter of parents who fled Cambodia in 1981.
While on a visit to her family home in Oxfordshire, she looks through photo albums of her lost relatives and listens to her mother’s stories of how sewing colourful underwear saved her life during the Pol Pot regime.
