Police in Kampong Thom province will file complaints in the provincial court against two military police officers wanted in connection with a road collision that killed three young men.

Baray district police chief Mey Chhaem said the military police officers had on Friday been pursuing a truck that ploughed through a checkpoint when their car crashed into a motorbike carrying the three victims, who were all either 19 or 20.

The truck was believed to have been transporting illegally felled wood.

One of the men died at the scene, while the other two later succumbed at a hospital in Santuk district, Mey Chhaem said.

The two military police officials fled the scene.

“The military police car was dumped into the lake, but it has now been brought to our district police station for the investigation to find out who was the real driver. The driver will be responsible before the law,” Mey Chhaem said.

After police determined that the car was from Santuk district, Mey Chhaem said they approached the district military police chief, but that official denied knowing the identity of the driver.

“That is normal because the boss is protecting his staff,” Mey Chhaem said.

“We cannot force them.”

But Keo Hour, the deputy provincial police chief, said that police had identified the two military police officers believed to be responsible for the collision.
