Siem Reap, Cambodia, February 11, 2009 -- The PEPY Ride, an educational non-profit based in Siem Reap Province, announces its partnership with Dubai Cares to build three new schools in Cambodia. With organizational help from PEPY, the Dubai based charity is funding the construction of the primary schools in Chanleas Dai Commune. Once complete, the schools will be operated by the local district office of education, which will provide the administration, teachers, and classroom curricula.

The new schools will provide easy access to a safe learning environment for hundreds of students. Currently, many primary students are either studying in crumbling, unsafe buildings, or commuting long distances on foot or bike to the nearest school each day. Despite the millions of tourism dollars that pour into the city of Siem Reap each year, the surrounding province remains one of the poorest in Cambodia, lacking infrastructure in rural areas like Chanleas Dai. The school construction projects began in January in the villages of Ruun, Preah Lean, and Tram Kang, and will be completed in May 2009. Committees of community members will monitor the projects in each of the villages.

Dubai Cares was founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE Prime Minister and Vice-President and Ruler of Dubai. Inspired by the leader’s belief that education is the most effective tool to break the cycle of poverty, Dubai Cares aims to improve children's access to primary education in developing countries like Cambodia.

PEPY has been working in Chanleas Dai for the past 3 years, providing educational support for the community. For this project, PEPY is assisting each of the village school committees with project management and coordination with the community-chosen building contractors. After completion of the schools, PEPY will continue to provide educational support for the villages of Chanleas Dai Commune. PEPY is currently funding the construction of the community’s first-ever junior high school, which will provide easily accessible secondary education to students in Chanleas Dai.

For travelers looking to help PEPY in its goal to aid rural communities in improving their own standards of living – PEPY offers cultural bike rides through Cambodia through its partner PEPY Tours. PEPY Tours is a social venture. The income generated through PEPY Tours funds operating expenses of our non-profit organization, The PEPY Ride.

The PEPY Ride is a New York State registered Non-for-Profit Corporation founded in 2005 to aid rural communities in improving their own standards of living, with a focus on increased access to quality education in rural Cambodia.
