In Brief: Govt seeks end to duties

CAMBODIA will ask the United States government to drop duties on Cambodian garment exports when representatives of the two countries meet in Washington on Saturday to mark a decade of bilateral trade, Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union (CCAWDU) President Ath Thorn said Monday. The Cambodian delegation, which leaves today, will be led by Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh and include garment sector representatives. Bilateral trade dropped 22 percent year on year to US$1.54 billion in the first nine months of 2009, US census bureau figures showed.

In Brief: ITC holds data seminar

THE International Trade Centre (ITC) introduced government officials to a range of analytical tools Monday at the start of a two-day workshop for government officials designed to improve import, export and foreign direct-investment processes. Joseph Wozniak, a programme manager at ITC, a joint agency of the World Trade Organisation and United Nations, said the tools would help officials analyse trade statistics, customs tariffs and foreign direct investment information. “This should help the government and private sector identify opportunities for investment by country and by sector,” he said.
