Thieving pair receive hefty terms in clink
Two men in Phnom Penh’s Chamkarmon district who stole people’s motorbikes at gunpoint received jail sentences on Monday. The suspects were sentenced to 30 and 35 years respectively, though only one was present at the hearing, having confessed to one robbery. His sidekick is still on the loose and is being hunted by police. The men have been accused of robbing five different motorbike owners at a Caltex gas station.
Wife of village chief killed in robbery
A 55-year-old woman was shot dead by two gunmen who were robbing her home in Pursat province’s Bakan district on Monday morning. The victim was the wife of a village chief. Her husband said the masked men, armed with AK-47s, circled the house firing their guns before rushing inside. As the husband tried to close the door behind him, the men shot his wife, immediately killing her. The suspects stole US$4,250 before escaping. Police believe the deadly robbery was motivated by revenge.
Dangkor gunmen all talk, no action
Two groups of men who pointed guns at one another during an argument were accosted by police in Phnom Penh’s Dangkor district on Sunday night. In the midst of a heated disagreement, the men drew their weapons and engaged in a tense standoff. As police arrived on the scene, most of the suspects were able to flee successfully, though one was apprehended for questioning. He was detained temporarily at Kakab commune police station and released on Monday after paying a fine.
Sisters assaulted in Kampong Speu
A 21-year-old man accused of raping two sisters in Kampong Speu was arrested in the province’s Kong Pisey district on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday, in Preah Vihea commune, when the suspect was watching television with the victims at their home while their parents were not there. Police said that during questioning, the accused confessed to raping the girls, ages 13 and 11.
Owners don't know house burned down
A fire damaged a house in Kampong Thom province’s Stung Sen district on Sunday. Witnesses said the house was engulfed in flames, and that it was fortunate that the fire did not spread. The home’s owners still do not know that their home burned down because they have relocated to Phnom Penh for the time being. Police said that everything in the house was damaged, though they do not know how the fire started.
