FFC close in on new national team coach

After weeks of speculation, the Football Federation of Cambodia said yesterday they are ‘“almost certain’’ of accepting the Korean Football Association offer of one of their qualified coaches as the Kingdom’s next national team head coach.

In a recent communication from the Korean federation’s international affairs section, the FFC was provided background details and credentials of highly regarded South Korean coach Sejin Yeo for consideration on a one-year contract.

FFC Deputy Secretary May Tola stated that they would be making a decision “very soon,” adding their relationship with the Korean Federation “has been excellent.”

“We respect their choice, and I do not see any reason to chop and change,” May Tola said.

The federation official also revealed that the Koreans were willing to pay the coach’s salary, whereas the FFC would be required to take care of his accommodation, transport and other needs in Phnom Penh as well as appointing an interpreter.

The national team coaching position has been vacant since Australian Scott O’Donell’s completed his one year contract with the FFC on June 1.

Meanwhile, the FFC is planning to host the first National Women’s Football Championships, with officials soon to be dispatched to all provinces to assess the standard of women’s teams. Eventually 10 of the best teams will be selected to take part in the event, with May Tola emphasising they are “looking for quality, not quantity”.
