Director Socheata Poeuv speaks at a press conference prior to the screening of her 2006 film New Year Baby yesterday at the Chenla Theatre in Phnom Penh. The film traces the story of her family, which left Cambodia for the United States after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. “As I was doing research about Cambodian history for New Year Baby,” the director said, “I learned about something that isn’t taught in schools in America – that during the secret bombing campaign of the 1960s and ’70s the US dropped more bombs on Cambodia than were dropped on Japan during World War II. We must acknowledge that the relations between the US and Cambodia have included conflict and destruction.” The screening was part of programming marking the 60th anniversary of bilateral ties between Cambodia and the US.
