Meeting with top monks Sunday, Prime Minister Hun Sen voiced support for their outcry against the controversial rock opera Where Elephants Weep, which divided government officials by infusing the traditional Buddhist tale with Broadway motifs. He advised that in the future, authors, filmmakers and playwrights seek permission from the Ministry of Cults and Religions before going public with work that refers to Buddhism. "Buddism cannot be made into something fun," he said. "In the future, we will not allow this problem to happen again." Performance organisers had earlier agreed to modify certain controversial scenes for the show to be broadcast on television.
