In Brief: Schools celebrate europe day

Students from four universities in Phnom Penh celebrated Europe Day Thursday by watching documentaries about European history and learning about the EU's activities in Cambodia and other countries. "The EU is still Cambodia's biggest development partner in terms of grant aid," Andrew Mace, ambassador of the United Kingdom and representative of the Council of the European Union said at Pannasatra University. Cambodia University, the Royal University of Phnom Penh and the Royal University of Law and Economic also celebrated the occasion.


In Brief: EU court hearing for illegal vessel

The European Court of Human Rights held a Grand Chamber hearing Wednesday for the crew of a ship intercepted by French authorities while flying a Cambodian flag. The Winner was pulled off the Senegalese coast June 13, 2002, on suspicion it was involved in narcotics trafficking, and towed to Brest, France, where it docked June 26. During that time, the crew members say they were illegally deprived of liberty and held for an additional period in police custody in France. After the hearing the court will begin its deliberations, with a judgement to be delivered "at a later date".


In Brief: Judges to decide on ieng thirith bail

Judges are to decide whether former Khmer Rouge social affairs minister Ieng Thirith should be released on bail in a public hearing scheduled Monday at the war crimes court. The former regime leader has been held at the court's detention facility since she was arrested, along with her husband, former foreign affairs minister Ieng Sary, in 2007.
