“New statistics shows that among various business operations run by Cambodians so far, 31% are retail selling businesses.
“According to a joint study by the International Finance Corporation and by the Asia Foundation released last week, in Cambodia, there are 63,507 business operations out of which 31% are retail selling businesses and 22% are food service operations like restaurants and bars. Supermarkets or places selling modern goods like department stores set up in air conditioned environments contribute 17%. Places providing repairing services for cars, motorbikes, bikes, or shoes contribute 10%. Besides, there are other operations such as accommodation services – 9%, professional services like hospitals and law offices – 2%, construction operations – 1%, natural resources operations – 1%, and some other services, including food products like cake-baking houses or ice-producing sites.
“The same source added that many of those operations are located in Phnom Penh. It says, ‘45% of the 63,507 business operations are located in Phnom Penh, 10% in Battambang, 7% in Kandal, and 5% in Siem Reap.’
“There are up to 28,440 operations in total located in Phnom Penh, 6,153 operations in Battambang, 4,459 in Kandal, and 3,381 in Siem Reap and the provinces, with the lowest number of sites in Kep, Stung Treng, and Preah Vihear.
“This study says that there are only 180 business operation sites in Kep, 214 in Stung Treng, and 309 in Preah Vihear.”
