SOUTH KOREAN authorities have seized a Cambodian-registered vessel after it reportedly collided with a fishing boat Friday, news agencies have reported.

Two sailors were killed, and seven were still missing this weekend after the collision, which occurred in the waters west of Seoul, according to the Yonhap news agency.

“We’ve captured the Taiyo 1, a Cambodian-registered 1,472-tonne freighter, which was apparently involved in the collision,” an Incheon maritime police spokesman said.

Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said he was unaware of the incident when contacted Sunday.

“We have no information about this,” he said.

In the past, critics have raised concerns about foreign ships registered in Cambodia, which they say has loose registration requirements.

Opposition lawmakers have said some ship owners are smuggling drugs or weapons under the Cambodian flag, potentially damaging the Kingdom’s reputation.
