State, ADB sign grant

CAMBODIA signed a grant agreement with the Asian Development Bank on Monday providing US$5.75 million in funds from the Finnish government to help finance a poverty-reduction project in the Tonle Sap basin. In a statement issued on Monday, the ADB said the grant was part of a $55.3 million project aimed at improving the “uneven” development of the agricultural sector in Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom and Siem Reap provinces. In addition to the Finnish funds, $30.7 million will come from the ADB, $13.38 million from the International Fund for Agricultural Development and $5.47 million from the Cambodian government.

Anti-drugs meeting

DRUG officials from ASEAN countries as well as China, South Korea and Japan kicked off a three-day meeting in Jakarta yesterday set to focus on bolstering anti-drug trafficking initiatives, Cambodian officials said. Moek Dara, secretary general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs at the Ministry of Interior, said yesterday’s talks centred on the prevention of cross-border smuggling. The meeting is scheduled to wind up on tomorrow.

Karate star to launch plan for land-mine film

TONY Schiena, a Hollywood action star and former captain of the United States karate team, was set to hold a press conference at the Ministry of Information this afternoon to announce his plans to produce a movie about Cambodia’s land mine scourge, the ministry said in a statement yesterday. Schiena, a former world karate champion, kicked off his acting career in 2004, starring alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme in the action film Wake of Death.
