ONE Royal Cambodian Armed Forces soldier was killed and another injured earlier this week when a grenade launcher exploded in Banteay Meanchey province, police said. Yort Ray, police chief of Thmar Puok district, where the incident occurred on Monday, said the two soldiers from Military Region 5 – 27-year-old Vong Vuth and 32-year-old Som Pov – were carrying wooden poles to build a fence when Vong Vuth accidentally set one of the poles down on the grenade launcher, causing it to explode. He said the launcher was left during fighting in the 1980s between Khmer Rouge and Vietnamese soldiers. Vong Vuth died at the scene, while Som Pov was hospitalised.
