Fifteen students from James Hargest College will set off on a mission on Saturday to help underprivileged children in Cambodia.
The mission, set up by an Auckland-based Christian group, will have the students working with three orphanages in poverty stricken areas of Cambodia.
James Hargest College head of guidance and careers Sandra Tyree will lead the group from Invercargill for the two-week mission.
The trip was open to any student, regardless of their religion, she said
"They (students) have a heart for this mission.
"(However) they needed to be respectful of the fact that there is a Christian organisation running it."
The group had no idea what they would face in Cambodia, Mrs Tyree said.
"Normally, people are very careful to not see the ugly side of life. Until you see it in front of you, it is very hard to get an idea of it," she said.
The trip will cost each student $3000, a significant amount of that raised by the students, Mrs Tyree said. "They want to make a difference, many have had to work hard to raise the money."
