KANDAL provincial court yesterday charged two 15-year-old novice monks with raping two 6-year-old schoolgirls, deputy prosecutor Vong Bunvisoth said. Kea Sophal, a lawyer for the victims provided by the rights group Adhoc, said the suspects – Thy Dina and Kuy Kimhong – faced prison terms of between 15 and 20 years. Police said on Sunday that the two girls were raped on Wednesday morning of last week after the novice monks lured them into a generator room by promising them packages of noodles.

Extension of time for Duch appeal granted

Tuesday, 19 October 2010 15:01 James O'Toole

THE Khmer Rouge tribunal has granted lawyers for former Tuol Sleng prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, an additional 30 days to file an appeal against their client’s July conviction. The team requested additional time last month, citing the “size and complexity” of the case and the recent appointment of defence lawyer Kang Ritheary, who joined the team in August. The defence now has until November 22 to file its full appeal; prosecutors have also appealed against the judgment, claiming Duch’s 30-year jail sentence is “manifestly inadequate”.
