EVICTIONS

The publisher of Deum Ampil newspaper, Soy Sopheap, said more than 10 bodyguards of Labour Ministry Secretary of State Othsman Hassan followed three evictees to his office Monday, causing turmoil in the newsroom. Soy Sopheap said the three were from Phnom Penh's B-Train community, who are being evicted from their land, and came to tell reporters their story. They are seeking compensation from Hassan's company, which has plans to develop the land, the publisher said, adding that the Municipal Court had sentenced them to three years jail and a US$20,000 fine. Hassan said that was because they had fraudulently put their names on a list of residents. Hassan told the Post he has no bodyguards and the 10 men were his nephews with no powers of arrest. A representative of the B-Train group was unavailable for comment Monday.
