Lexington — Room at the Table is sponsoring a fundraising event to benefit The Sharing Foundation on Feb. 27 from 6-8 p.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC, 55 Coolidge Ave., Lexington.

The Sharing Foundation was founded in 1998 by Dr. Nancy Hendrie, a retired Concord pediatrician and the foundation's president. Today it serves more than 1,500 Cambodian children each day through its many ongoing programs, one of which is the Roteang Orphanage. The proceeds of Room at the Table's event will help to feed, clothe, educate, and provide medical care for the children of this orphanage.

Other educational programs of The Sharing Foundation include a Montessori-based preschool, Khmer literacy and English language programs, high school and college student sponsorships, a farming cooperative, a computer school, and a sewing school. Additional projects include efforts to provide clean water, school uniforms for street children of the village, sponsorship of handicapped children in their own homes, and large immunization outreach efforts.

Ninety-one percent of every dollar donated supports the Sharing Foundation's programs in Cambodia.

At the Feb. 27 event, there will be a slideshow and cultural exhibit, as well as an opportunity to purchase items such as tote bags and purses — all sewn by Cambodian young women. As always, children are welcome and there will be special craft projects for their participation. Entertainment will be provided by LHS a capella group Rock Paper Scissors. A meal prepared with authentic Cambodian recipes from Bopha Samms' Cambodian Stir Crazy restaurant in Pocasset will be served. There is no admission charge, but donations equivalent to a restaurant meal are suggested.
