The Philippines and a Thai MP called for Cambodia and Thailand to resolve their border disputes on Monday at a press conference at the Philippine Center.
Jon Ungphankom, a Thai MP, stated at the press conference that “Thailand should not try to make war with its neighbors.”
Conflict between Cambodia and Thailand is nothing new, he added. “It is not a new story that Thailand opposes Cambodian at Preah Vihear Temple.” He remarked that legitimate concerns could have been raised earlier, questioning whether the current spat was the result of Thai nationalist politics.
The Thai Government should not try to play for time in delaying demarcation of the Cambodian-Thai border, he suggested.
“Cambodian and Thai power leaders should negotiate,” he said. The Thai MP said Preah Vihear Temple has become a big symbol the both sides.
“Preah Vihear is our shared heritage so we should not try to destroy and hide it from the world,” he stressed. At around 14 months, the stndoff has been lengthy, he said, though he expressed hopes it would soon be over.
The three-day September 28-30 seminar will include ASEAN members, human rights groups, NGOs and the media.
