SEVEN men were arrested on Wednesday in connection with last week’s shooting death of a Kep police captain at a roadside restaurant in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district.
“We have arrested seven suspects, but the person who hired the murderers is still being hunted,” Municipal Police Chief Touch Naruth said on Wednesday. Though the motive for the murder remains unclear, Touch Naruth said, it may have been a revenge killing.
The victim, 44-year-old Hor Kemmeng, was eating with his girlfriend at Tai Tai restaurant on Monivong Boulevard in Boeung Raing commune around 7pm Thursday evening when assailants riding a motorbike stopped outside the restaurant and opened fire before speeding away.
Municipal Police Deputy Chief Pol Pithey said three of the men arrested were shooters, and that another four were also connected to the attack.
“Two of the seven men assisted the police in locating and arresting the other suspects,” Pol Pithey said.
“Now we are sending the seven suspects to Municipal Court for further investigation, and we are trying to hunt down the man who hired the killers,” he added.
Hor Kemmeng was discovered with a small box of an unidentified substance in his pocket at the scene, though Pol Pithey declined to comment on whether drugs were a factor in the case, citing an ongoing investigation.
