Golden Rice Cambodia Co Ltd has exported 5,000 tonnes of Jasmine rice to date in 2010 and is on track to hit its target of 20,000 tonnes by year end, according to the company general manager, Chan Vuthy. Labour Dispute

Roughly half of the 3,000 participants in a strike held Monday outside the Ocean Garment Factory in Dangkor district returned to work on Tuesday, a factory official said. The strike was prompted by the recent suspension of seven employees who had protested the introduction of overtime hours. Lay Sokchea, the factory’s chief of administration, said the workers had opted to return after realising that the strike was “illegal” and would not benefit their cause. “According to the law, they should inform the factory and authorities a week before they decide to strike,” he said. But Sam Ty, one of the seven suspended workers and a representative of the Free Trade Union, said only 100 workers had returned to work, and that the others would not return until Lay Sokchea is fired.

Seeking Backup

Opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) lawmaker Mu Sochua plans to leave for the US on Thursday bearing a petition for President Barack Obama, who she hopes will condemn the Cambodian government for using the courts as a tool to silence critics. She said Tuesday that she planned to submit the petition to “someone close” to Obama, though she declined to elaborate. Launched Thursday, the petition had collected about 1,300 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon, she said. “I think President Obama is a glorious man who protects human rights and justice,” she said. “Therefore, I will ask him to condemn individual politicians who use the courts as a political tool to silence members of the opposition parties.”
