Thirty organisations have called upon the Cambodian government to take stronger measures to guarantee housing rights and end forced evictions, at a multilateral forum held in Phnom Penh yesterday.

Taryn Lesser, officer for the Organisation of Rights to Housing and Land at the United Nation’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the government must play a role in ensuring access to proper housing, in accordance with the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, ratified by Cambodia in 1992.

Ouch Leng, president of the land department at local rights group ADHOC, said yesterday that seven communities in Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Siem Reap and Koh Kong provinces had been evicted by the government so far this year.

Ou Wondy, permanent deputy secretary general of the General Secretariat of the Council for Land Policy, said that the government took proper measures to enforce land management, while ensuring the security of land possession.
