Cambodian cargo ship collides with Indian vessel, sinks

A Cambodian cargo ship sank off the South Korean coast after it collided with an Indian ship but there were no casualties, according to an announcement here Thursday.

The Director-General of Shipping (DG-S) said the Indian ship, M.T. Desh Viraat, was on her maiden voyage from Okpo to Yosu port in South Korea with a crew of 36 Indians on board when the accident took place at around 6 a.m. (South Korea time) Wednesday.

The Indian ship collided with the Cambodian ship which sank soon afterwards. Of the total 12 crewmembers on the Cambodian ship, 10 were rescued by the Korean Coast Guard while two were picked up later from a life raft.

The Indian ship has been taken to and anchored at Pusan port for conducting an investigation into the tragedy. The master and second engineer have been taken to the Marine Police for investigations.

The DG-S has ordered the owner of the Indian ship to forward the master’s report and the investigation report of the company owning the ship into the circumstances that led to the incident. The Indian embassy in South Korea has also been kept updated on the situation.
