The National Election Committee (NEC) sent to the National Assembly president a proposal to cut in half the salary of Sam Rainsy, the leader of the main opposition party.

According to the NEC the president of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) violated the electoral law during the general election and did not pay the applying fine. On October 24, the NEC sent a letter to Heng Samrin, president of the National Assembly.

The NEC took this opportunity to remind people fined by the NEC that they have 30 days to pay their penalties. In case of non-payment, legal proceedings would apply. The NEC convicted Sam Rainsy for having verbally abused three Cambodia’s People Party (CPP) officials. He has not yet settled the 10 million riel (US$ 2,500) penalty and the fine is now overdue.

“To ensure that justice is enforced, the NEC asked the cooperation of the President of the National Assembly to cut Sam Rainsy salary and therefore pay the fine to the national budget cashier”, detailed a release dated October 27.
