A government official on Monday urged women who are victims of a crime to take action against the perpetrator.

"For the Ministry of Women's Affairs, it is clear that any violation against women's rights must not be tolerated," said Keth Mardy, head of the legal affairs department for the ministry, said, as a guest on "Hello VOA."

Domestic violence and other crimes, including rape, continue to plague Cambodia, but Keth Mardy said sometimes women were loathe to complain about their husbands, who are often breadwinners.

Other women, she said, may not know their legal rights.

"It depends on the individual victim, whether to file a complaint or not," Keth Mardy said.
The Ministry of Women's Affairs is currently in the middle of a 16-day campaign against violence against women.
