In Brief: ADB, Govt to hold workshop

The Asian Development Bank, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, is to hold a regional workshop on involuntary resettlement to focus on sharing examples of good practice in resettlement management in the region. “Good resettlement planning …can, if done properly, open up new opportunities to improve incomes and living conditions of those affected,” the ADB said in a press statement. The workshop will run from today through Friday at the Sunway Hotel.


In Brief: Khieu Samphan appeal denied

Lawyers for former Khmer Rouge head of state Khieu Samphan have again lost an appeal to release their client from detention at the Khmer Rouge tribunal on the basis that their client’s case file is not in their common language – French. A separate hearing against the extension of the former leader’s detention will be held Friday, where lawyers say they will continue their translation argument. “Khieu Samphan’s detention is illegal. We request the chamber to release Khieu Samphan immediately,” co-lawyer Sa Sovan said Sunday.


In Brief: US pledges $1.5m to KR tribunal

The United States has pledged US$1.5 million to the UN side of the Khmer Rouge tribunal in the wake of its first trial, which began Tuesday. John Johnson, spokesman for the US embassy, said that the US was satisfied with the judicial process of the hybrid court but that it would continue to work with it to “address administrative reforms” including the issue of corruption allegations
.
