In Brief: NRP becomes Nationalist Party

The former Norodom Ranariddh Party changed its name and logo on Saturday. In a party-wide vote, the party decided to call itself the Nationalist Party, and its logo was changed from a portrait of Norodom Ranariddh in front of a map of Cambodia to just a map of Cambodia. The vote also made acting president Chhim Seak Leng the official president of the Nationalist Party.

In Brief: Sihanouk to return to Cambodia in July

King Father Norodom Sihanouk announced Saturday that he would return to Cambodia next month after spending nearly one full year in China receiving medical treatment. In a statement sent to media, Sihanouk, who is 87, said, "Between July 9 and September 2, 2009, I will have honour and happiness to live in Cambodia, in the midst of my lovely compatriots." He said he would return to China in September at the behest of his "very eminent Chinese doctors" for further treatment. The former monarch announced last Monday that his doctors had cured his third bout of cancer.

In Brief: UXO and land mine Accidents down

Accidents involving land mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) last month led to one death and seven injuries, four of which required amputation, according to the latest figures from the Cambodia Mine/UXO Victim Information System (CMVIS). The May CMVIS report, released Friday, listed 12 casualties in total, marking a 61-percent decrease compared to May 2008. There were 129 casualties reported in the first five months of 2009, down roughly 16 percent compared to 2008. There were 269 casualties reported in 2008.
