CRACKDOWN

A regional press watchdog has criticised last year’s crackdown on government critics, saying it has resulted in a “severely compromised environment for free expression” in Cambodia. In its annual report for 2009, released on Saturday, the Bangkok-based Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SAPA) said the government’s actions in 2009 had seen a narrowing of the democratic space for the media, the courts and for opposition politicians. “The challenges for the Cambodian media in 2010, therefore, will remain and will be heightened by an emboldened government that has limited and narrowed the space for free expression … with passivity as well as deliberate campaigns to silence its critics,” the report said.

PHNOM PENH – The 22nd gameweek of the Fantasy football league season was a colossal one in many aspects. With a dozen fixtures including two each for Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool, it was no surprise to see the table brimming with centuries come Sunday. The US$20 Cellcard phone voucher and T-shirt was well deserved by Sok Bunneang. His Sangha FC scored a magnificent 165 points – just a single point of the league’s “Dream Team” tally. Sangha FC sang loudest thanks to a stunning solo performance from captain Wayne Rooney, whose fantastic five strikes and bonuses earnt him a total of 64 points. Cesc Fabregas was also included to add 24 points as well as 18 from Dirk Kuyt. Heads up for the midweek games now, with gameweek 23 offering only eight games and a deadline of 2:30am Wednesday morning.
