IT seems bums are big - and getting bigger. Flat-bottomed women trying to emulate "bootylicious" stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce Knowles are snapping up padded underwear to add centimetres to their derrieres.

Jenny Tew designs and sells the garments from her Sydney lingerie shop and it is a fashion trend that is likely to sweep across the country.

"They're very popular. Everyone who walks past and sees it buys it, especially skinny people and Asian people because most of us have flat bums," Tew said.

"We don't sell many to European women because they've got big bums."

Ms Tew, who came to Australia from Cambodia, added the first pair of underpants to her shape-wear range in 2006 after receiving "so many requests from local customers for bigger bums".

Ms Tew said she sells about 1500 pairs of the pants, which add up to 4cm to flat backsides, a year. "On party nights, I will wear them. They make so much difference," Ms Tew said.

One customer said she bought a pair last year after seeing them in the shop window. "It was new and I wanted to try them because I wanted to know if they worked," said the 30-year-old Vietnamese woman. And did they?

"Yeah, they give me more volume and look good with jeans."
