MFIs accounts workshop

TWENTY microfinance institutions (MFIs) and an NGO that is a member of the Microfinance Association (CMA) took part in a one-day workshop Wednesday on the use of technology in microfinance and retail banking. Organised by the association with assistance from accounting firm Southtech Co, the event looked at modern accounting methods for MFIs to promote efficiency within the sector, said Koy Somrithvisoth, an IT and marketing assistant of CMA.

SMEs to export rice

THE Cambodian Small and Medium Industries Association is due to sign a rice-export agreement with Lithuania and Latvia for 480 tonnes, a representative of the organisation said Wednesday. Secretary General Outh Renne said the small business association had already exported 144 tonnes of 10 percent broken rice so far this year at US$700 tonne. Of that total, 96 tonnes went to Poland and the remainder to Germany. The latest shipment would be sent in the middle of next month, he added. “We’re hoping the association will get more agreements with partners to raise rice exports from Cambodia,” said Outh Renne.

Camko to finish condos

CAMKO City, the satellite development scheduled to house the country’s first stock exchange, will have completed eight 16-storey condominiums, with a further seven following by the end of the year, a representative of the developer World City Co Ltd said Wednesday. Kheng Ser, assistant to World City Vice President Duk-Kon Kim, said the units would represent the end of the first phase of residential development. “Now, we pre-booking for rent and sale,” he said, adding that 80 percent of the properties were sold. World City has invested US$109 million so far in the first phase of Camko.

Siem Reap tourism falls

THE number of tourists to Siem Reap province declined 11.5 percent in January to 216,929 from 241,875 tourists in January 2009, a tourism official at Siem Reap tourism department told the Post Wednesday. Administrative Chief Chheuy Chhorn said 122,163 of the total were foreign tourists, an increase of 15.5 percent on the same month last year, while local visitor numbers were down sharply 30.47 percent. “New direct flights from foreign countries and a decrease on those locally caused many [Cambodians] to travel outside,” he said.
