TWO HURT IN SWORDFIGHT AT GANGSTER DANCE
Two men described as “gangsters” were seriously injured following a swordfight at a dance party in Kandal province Monday. Police said an indeterminate number of men got into an argument with each other while they were shaking loose on the dancefloor. They then fought each other with swords and rocks in a tussle that caused a great disturbance. Most of the “gangsters” managed to escape, but two seriously hurt combatants were sent to hospital. Villagers said such brawls happen frequently during dance parties. Police said they were trying to find the other brawlers so that they could “educate” them.

MAN STABS SIBLING, SELF, THEN SETS FIRE TO HOME
Police in Phnom Penh’s Russey Keo district said a 25-year-old man stabbed his brother and then himself before setting fire to his house Tuesday. It is believed that the violence followed a heated argument, though the subject remains unknown. Police investigating the case said the younger brother stabbed his older brother first, and then decided to stab himself. He then set fire to his house. Alert neighbours heard the ruckus, however, and quickly called police in to help. The older brother has been sent to hospital. Family members said they did not want to bring the legal system into the fracas.

HENPECKED HUSBAND TAKES HIS OWN LIFE
A 37-year-old man took his own life after his wife criticised him for his bad habits, police in Battambang province said. The man was apparently incapable of providing for his family. His shortcomings were painfully evident over Khmer New Year, when he failed to earn enough to ensure his family had a good time. Neighbours said the man constantly went for strolls with friends and was drunk most of the time. And late at night when he came home, he would always shout loudly. On Monday, the man’s wife criticised him for his failings. So he swallowed poison and died.

SUICIDE OR MURDER? COPS AND VILLAGERS DIFFER
Mystery and intrigue surround the death of a 35-year-old man whose body was found near a pond in Sihanoukville Tuesday. Police at first ruled the death a suicide, citing a length of rope they found near the body. But villagers said the man had been murdered. The man’s mother pointed an accusatory finger at the man’s ex-wife, who left him two months ago to marry a new man. Police pledged to investigate further.
