Svay Rieng province residents Meas Srey (second from left) and Prum Chea (third from right) exit Kandal provincial prison yesterday, one day after the Appeal Court ordered that the one-year sentences they received in connection with a political stunt along the Vietnamese border be shortened by two months. The villagers were convicted in the same case that saw opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who is in self-imposed exile, receive a two-year sentence for racial incitement and destroying public property. At a press conference yesterday, Sam Rainsy Party spokesman Yim Sovann reiterated the party’s call for a “political compromise” that would allow Sam Rainsy to return to Cambodia. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Press and Quick Reaction Unit at the Council of Ministers, said the chances of such a compromise were far-fetched – “like the horizon”.
