UNESCO’s General Director Irina Bokova has called on Thailand and Cambodia to remain calm and display restraint in the wake of border clashes over the past few days which led to a number of casualties.

Bokova expressed particular concern over the Preah Vihear Temple, which sustained damage during the clashes.

The temple, dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva, consists of seven sacred structures linked by paved paths and more than 800-meter-long stairs.
In 2008 the temple was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
