The meeting between Asean secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday evening had nothing to do with the Thai government, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Tuesday.

Mr Suthep said Mr Surin had not been asked to discuss the border dispute with Cambodia on Thailand's behalf, and reiterated that the government wants bilateral talks with Phnom Penh on settling the conflict.

"It is his job as Asean secretary-general. It had nothing to do with Thailand," Mr Suthep said.

He repeated the government's position, that there is no need for international organisations like Asean to interfere in the matter.

Talks between the government and Phnom Penh will be held when the time is right, he said.
